Crossing the street can be surprisingly tricky business. In response to an increase in pedestrian traffic fatalities, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been promoting the "Everyone is a Pedestrian" campaign on Twitter, and doling out the following advice:

• Use a crosswalk whenever possible, and wait for the walk signal
• Don't use electronic devices when crossing
• Don't assume a driver can see
