Crossing the street can be surprisingly tricky business. In response to an increase in pedestrian traffic fatalities, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been promoting the "Everyone is a Pedestrian" campaign on Twitter, and doling out the following advice:

  • Use a crosswalk whenever possible, and wait for the walk signal
  • Don't use electronic devices when crossing
  • Don't assume a driver can see you -- make eye contact
  • Use sidewalks where available, or walk facing traffic

The burden on keeping foot traffic safe falls even heavier on the shoulders of drivers themselves, whom the NHTSA recommends to remain ever-vigilant for pedestrians, even when not near a crosswalk, and:

  • Follow slower speed limits in school zones and neighborhoods with children
  • Never pass a vehicles stopped at a crosswalk
  • Be aware that pedestrians wearing headphones may not hear your vehicle
