Look at the Volkswagen New Beetle. That adorable little bubble that ran from 1997 through 2010. It was so cute you could pinch its cheeks. If it had cheeks. Headlights? Whatever.
Now, that decade plus of being the stupidly cute mascot of the Volkswagen lineup has left many people with the impression that Beetles are not cars to be taken seriously.
They'd be wrong.
The Volkswagen Beetle has a history of racing that dates almost all the way back to its origins. These cars are like wolverines: small, but fierce. For decades they have dominated the scene in rally racing, rallycross, Baja 1000, and just about anything that requires durability, maneuverability, and unquenchable zest for victory.
We've only got America's lust for huge muscle cars that go fast in a straight line to blame for the bug's disappearance on the track.
Thanks to Global RallyCross, and drivers like Tanner Foust, the little VW bug is making a comeback, and tearing the competition to shreds.
